Car rides with toddlers are a special parenting experience 😄
You start every trip full of optimism.
Everyone is strapped in. Snacks are packed. Water bottles are within reach. Mum is ready. The kids are excited because you’re “going out.” For a few glorious minutes, everything is calm.
Then reality slowly creeps in…
One child starts kicking the seat. Another asks, “Are we there yet?” far sooner than humanly reasonable. Someone suddenly decides they absolutely need a smartphone. Not even to use — just to hold. And if a phone appears, you now need a charger because the battery is always mysteriously dying.

If no screens are handed over, boredom sets in. Noise levels rise. The little one becomes restless. Naps may happen… or chaos may happen.
If you’ve ever driven with toddlers, you know exactly what this feels like 😂
Over time, I’ve learned something important: you don’t defeat car boredom — you redirect it. And the easiest way to do that is with simple, screen-free car activities.
Toddlers don’t need fancy entertainment. They just need something engaging, interactive, and slightly silly.
Here are some surprisingly effective ideas.
🚗 1. Count Until You Spot It
This game works every single time because it’s so simple.
Pick a target:
“Let’s count how many cars we see before spotting a bus!”
Everyone counts together:
“One… two… three…”
When someone spots the bus, you reset and start again.
You can rotate endlessly:
- Count until a white car
- Count until a motorbike
- Count until a matatu
- Count until a truck
Toddlers love having a mission.
🧔 2. Beard or No Beard
This one always brings laughter.
As cars approach, kids guess what they’ll see:
“Man or woman?”
Or the classic:
“Beard… or no beard?”
They shout their predictions before the passengers are visible.
It’s silly, unpredictable, and incredibly entertaining for young kids.

🐘 3. The Alphabet Animal Game
Perfect for keeping little brains busy.
Go through the alphabet, but every letter must be an animal.
- A – Antelope
- B – Bear
- C – Cow
Each child takes turns.
Even toddlers who barely know the alphabet enjoy shouting out animals. Accuracy is optional. Enthusiasm is guaranteed.
📖 4. Storytelling – One Line at a Time
This game can stretch for an entire journey.
Start a story:
“Once upon a time, there was a tiny lion…”
Next child adds one line.
Next child continues.
Stories quickly become wild and hilarious:
“…and then the lion opened a supermarket on the moon…”
Toddlers adore being part of the creative madness.
🔤 5. The Letter Tail Game
A timeless classic.
One child says a word:
“Cow.”
Next child must say a word starting with the last letter:
“Water.”
Next:
“Rabbit.”
And the chain continues.
Simple vocabulary works perfectly for younger kids.
🔢 6. Number Plate Guessing Game
Number plates are everywhere, making this ideal for car rides.
Kids predict what letters they’ll see next:
“I bet the next one starts with K!”
Excitement builds with every passing vehicle.
There are no real rules. That’s the beauty of it.
🌈 7. Rainbow Hunt
Choose rainbow colours in order:
Red → Orange → Yellow → Green → Blue → Indigo → Violet
Kids must spot each colour outside.
You cannot move to the next colour until the current one is found.
They can look for colours on:
- Cars
- Buildings
- Signs
- Clothes
First to complete the rainbow wins.
🚦 8. Traffic Light Challenge
Traffic lights become instant entertainment.
Kids call out the colours:
“GREEN!”
“RED!”
“ORANGE!”
Add playful actions:
- Green → clap once
- Red → freeze
- Orange → wiggle shoulders
Suddenly waiting at lights becomes fun.
🏠 9. “What Do You See?” Game
One child picks something visible outside.
“I see something blue…”
Everyone guesses.
This game encourages observation and curiosity.

🐄 10. Farm vs City Spotting
Perfect for mixed scenery drives.
Pick categories:
- Farm things → cows, goats, chickens
- City things → shops, boda bodas, billboards
Kids shout whenever they spot something from the chosen group.
🔢 11. Number Hunt
Pick a number and search for it everywhere.
“Let’s find the number 5!”
Kids can spot it on signs, plates, buildings, vehicles.
It keeps them scanning the world outside.
🎶 12. Sound Imitation Game
Parent makes a sound:
“Beep beep!”
“Moo!”
“Vroooom!”
Kids repeat it.
Then kids take over.
Warning: noise levels may increase dramatically 😄
🧍 13. Statue Game (Seated Version)
Pick a moment:
“Everyone freeze until we pass that tree!”
Toddlers love trying to stay perfectly still.
☁️ 14. Cloud Guessing
When the sky is visible:
“What does that cloud look like?”
Expect wonderfully imaginative answers.
🎨 15. Colour Hunt – Anything Goes
Instead of limiting colours to vehicles, expand the challenge.
“Find something yellow!”
Kids can look for colours anywhere outside.
👋 16. Friendly Wave Game
Choose people to wave at:
- Pedestrians
- Boda boda riders
- Other kids
The joy when someone waves back is priceless.
Why Screen-Free Car Activities Work
To adults, these games seem extremely basic.
To toddlers, they are:
✔ Interactive
✔ Novel
✔ Engaging
✔ Social
Most importantly, they involve you.
Children rarely demand screens because screens are magical. They want stimulation, connection, and participation.
The Real Goal
Screen-free car games are not about avoiding technology forever.
They’re about:
- Preventing fights over phones
- Avoiding charger drama
- Reducing restlessness
- Keeping journeys peaceful
And sometimes — just sometimes — enjoying a quiet drive.
If you’ve driven with toddlers, you already know:
Silence is suspicious.
Boredom is dangerous.
Better to have kids laughing, spotting random objects, inventing ridiculous stories, and loudly debating whether something is orange or just dark yellow 😄
Happy travels 🚗
